Montan-Ventures-Saar, formerly SHS Ventures Steel, is the venture capital arm of Montan-Stiftung-Saar, established in 2016 to identify and develop new business areas, particularly to enhance the competitiveness of the Saarland steel industry. The firm focuses on investing in disruptive technologies along the process industry, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, CO₂ reduction, and energy efficiency, as well as innovative B2B business areas. They invest in startups from the startup phase up to the second financing round, ideally when a startup has achieved product/market fit. Initial investments range between €0.2 million and €1 million as minority stakes, with participation in subsequent rounds. Their geographical focus includes startups and spin-offs from universities in the Saar-Lor-Lux region, and they are open to startups from DACH, Luxembourg, and France. Montan-Ventures-Saar also offers an accelerator program aimed at local startup teams in the pre-founding or startup phase, providing convertible loans to bridge to the first financing round.
